The St. Dominic Savio Scholarship is an effort of St. Mark's Youth Group to raise money through private donations to help teeangers in the community of Nogales, Mexico complete their high school education.
Every five hundred dollars we raise will give one more child an oppurtunity to get whet we take for granted here in the United States -- a high school education.
All money dontated to the St. Dominic Savio Scholarship Fund will go directly to paying for a Mexican teen's high school education. All other expenses for collecting or distributing this money will be assumed by the youth group at St. Mark's in Plano, Texas.
All we need from you is your generosity.
Why is this needed?
Public school in Matamoras is free only up to the freshmen year. The remaining three years of high school education to graduate can only be provided by private schools.
Unfortunately, the tuition needed to go to school is out of reach for most poor or middle class families. Therefore, most people do not graduate from high school because they can't afford to.
The average cost of books, supplies, and tuition for a student to go to school for one more year is less than $500! So the only thing standing in the way of these kids from getting a high school diploma is $1500.
A high school diploma in Mexico is similar to a college degree in the United States in that those who have one are more likely to find jobs, to have better salaries, and to have better jobs.
A gift of food, clothing, or medical care is needed for many of the people in Nogales. We can, and should, help with these kinds of gifts. But the greater gift that we can give is the gift of education.
Why is this needed? Because an educated child can do more for their own communty over time than any one-time gift of food or clothing that we can give.
